A wonderful day

I'm not sure how professional it is for the photographer to cry at their client's wedding - but it when the couple are people you have known for a long time, I think it is excusable! Fausto and Kelly's day could not have been more perfect - it took place at the beautiful countryside venue of Frasers at Coldharbour and they could not have been better looked after. Weddings are a coming together of so many different friends and family, it is one of those times in your life when you can be guaranteed to be surrounded by people who love you and are there to celebrate your love. I can promise you that mine were not the only tears shed.

Time out to learn

As a photographer, it is so important to be constantly learning and exploring all sorts of genres of photography. Food photography may not seem like an obvious choice for me to be looking at but I have spent the weekend watching the amazing food photographer, Penny de los Santos, running an on-line workshop with CreativeLive.com.
It is a privilege to watch another photographer at work, to see their techniques and style and how they work with the light.
Even though I primarily shoot people, I have learned so much and been inspired by the course.
I would recommend to any photographer, taking time out to learn a new technique or a different style of photography as it all informs what you do.

Wakey wakey!

This gorgeous girl is just 5 weeks old and SO cute. She also LOVES her sleep (lucky mum and dad!). We spent a lot of time gently encouraging her to wake up, just for a moment so that I could photograph those beautiful eyes. Luckily, Ruby is just as photogenic asleep as awake.

New Products

Well, it’s been a wonderful few weeks, with the children off school and lots of bank holidays – I have been taking a bit of time out but I haven’t forgotten you all!
I have been spending some time researching new products that I can offer. One I am very excited about is this bespoke wallpaper. It is printed locally on thick, wipe clean wallpaper and would look wonderful on a feature wall.
You will be able to choose an image from our session together and get made into wallpaper to fit the measurements of your space.
You can see here what one of my clients has done with their paper.
It’s a novel way to show off your images and will always be a talking point in your home.

New website - April 2011

Pop along to www.janetpenny.com for a glimpse of my glamorous new website. It has taken me a long time to design and develop it but I am very pleased with the new look and feel. I will be running a blog on there, in tandem with this one.

Private portrait - March 2011

I've had a run of photographing previous clients recently. I last photographed this fun three over 18 months ago. They're still full of energy and great to work with.

Private portrait - March 2011

A walk in the woods is always wonderful, but when you take a family of four and a bouncy young dog along, it becomes a whole lot of fun too.
People are often concerned about the weather when we do a location shoot, especially if there's no bright sun, but I love working on overcast days: no shadows under the eyes and a much softer light. Even if the sun was bright, I would be herding my client into the shade!

Private portrait - March 2011

I photographed this beautiful little one when she was just 5 weeks old and this week she was back for presents for Mother's Day. Here she is back again and as smiley as ever - just like her mum.

Atman Clinic website shots - February 2011

When I first walked round the Atman Clinic with Helen I had two thoughts:
What an amazingly light, bright and calm place and, I'm going to need a wider angle lens.

The Atman Clinic is a centre for complementary medicine in Tunbridge Wells, based in a beautiful Victorian house. You can find their website here:

Editorial - Fitness for Women magazine

Last Friday I had a great time shooting for the fashion section of a new magazine - Fitness for Women. Now, I'm not all that fit myself but this mag is perfect for me because it demystifies all those questions I have about how to exercise properly and efficiently, and makes me feel like I really can do it too.
Our model was wonderful and very patient with the space restrictions in my studio (with fitness gear, 4 of us and all my lighting it was a bit of a tight fit) and it was a real collaboration.

January - Private portrait

Toddlers are not the easiest of subjects to persuade round to your way of thinking - and who can blame them? Who wants to be stuck in a white room and have loads of people telling you what to do? Having a big brother with you often helps, and a few of your favourite toys, oh, and plenty of time to really start feeling like a supermodel!

Private Portrait

Way before Christmas I spent a lovely hour with these two bright young things, but because the shoot was intended as a present, I had to keep it under my hat.
I love shoots where my clients come up with as many ideas as I do and that's what happened here. We had great fun trying out lots of different poses and as a result came out with photos that truly reflected the wonderful personalities of these boys.

December - Wedding

A December wedding in Bristol for some friends of mine. It was a lovely day, full of laughter and fun. Shooting this late in the year is a real challenge for a photographer as you are always chasing the light but we got some great shots and I even had a chance to set up a photo booth in the evening.

December - Private Portrait

I confess, I'm a people watcher, which makes my job such a joy. One of the things I absolutely love about photographing families is watching the way that siblings interact, being able to capture that is the challenge I adore.

December - Private Portrait

There's something incredibly special about 4 generations of a family coming together. Before Christmas I shot a wonderful session with a family of 13 whose ages ranged across 90 years. Sessions like these are great because there are so many connections between family members to capture. I hired a great studio in Southborough for this shoot because it would have been a bit of a squeeze in mine. It's a great space and we were all made very welcome.

Inside Out Garden Ornaments - business photography

Before the snow arrived, I took a trip out to Wall Crouch to a wonderful, treasure trove of a business called Inside Out Garden Ornaments. It is crammed full of lovely statues, urns and figures to buy for your garden. I spent great couple of hours wandering around shooting photos for their website and went away with loads of ideas for things I'd like to fill my garden with.

Private Portrait - November 2010

O the joys of being 5! I spent a lovely afternoon with some great friends chasing their son around the garden TRYING to get him to stand still for 5 minutes. It was lots of fun and I think the energy really comes across.

Haywards Butchers - business photography

For all you foodies out there, I have had the best job for the last few months, photographing for our local butcher in Tonbridge. Haywards is a family-run butchers, which is committed to supplying great quality meat to its customers - I should know, I'm one of them.
It's been a great experience photographing all the wonderful meat that Haywards supplies, and then getting to cook it afterwards. I have learned about all sorts of cuts of meat and discovered a love of Ox tail - got any good recipes anyone?

Bonjour Baby Music - Halloween Party 2010

I had a lovely session at this great music class in Tunbridge Wells. The children were really relaxed and loved singing lots of French songs with their mums and dads - and they all looked SO cute in their costumes.
